Investing in Gemstones

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Jewelry has been around for ages. The idea behind jewelry is to decorate our bodies with something considered to be beautiful. Some of the most beautiful jewelry in the word includes gorgeous gemstones of all kinds. This jewelry is quite pricey, and the pricier it is the more desired it is often times. These gemstones are mined from the ground and then cut and polished to bring out its full beauty. They are divided into two categories, precious and semi-precious, with the precious stones being the rarest. Almost anyone who buys gemstones prefers the rare over the beautiful, and the rarer the stone is, the more it is worth.

As gemstones are considered a hard asset, much like real estate or gold, they are often considered to be a wise investment over what are considered “soft” investments, such as stocks and bonds. However, there are some major differences between gemstones and other hard assets that make them not as wise in the investment arena as they may first appear. The most blaring difference is the lack of set value. Real estate and gold have a set market value at any given point in time. Therefore, when the investor is ready to sell, they know they should sell for this amount, and buyers expect to pay this amount. The value of gemstones can be much more difficult to predict. They are basically worth whatever a buyer is willing to pay.

The other major difference is that other hard assets can often be sold whenever the owner wishes to. There are always buyers available. They are fairly liquid if need be. Gemstones are a different story however. There may or may not be an interested buyer at any given point in time. If a buyer is available, it is likely they are willing to pay only the lowest price possible. Taking a stone to a jeweler may give an idea of what it is worth, but if not one is willing to pay that, the potential seller is out of luck. Generally, when it comes to gemstones, it is better to collect rather than to invest. If you are interested in gemstones, buy what strikes your fancy and enjoy owning it. Have it made into jewelry, display it in a private collection, or simply put it in a safe. Just hold on to it without any expectation that it will turn a profit. Many who own gemstones never see the full value of their investment, as they are sold in auction after their death.

Personalized Initial Necklaces

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

Initial necklaces are great jewelry accessories for anyone; they offer an immediate extension of who you are and often serve as great conversation starters. They help to set the wearer apart from others around them just by simply wearing a necklace symbolizing their name. Fortunately, there are only a few decisions that need to be made when selecting an initial necklace. First of all, what kind of initials do you want to be the necklace? Some wearers like to have all of their initials, such as for their first, middle, and last names, while others prefer a simpler approach of just their first or last initial. This decision really just comes down to what sort of a look you are going for with your necklace.

Another factor that will go in to the decision-making for your new necklace or necklace pendant is how much you wish to spend. Necklaces with initials can be made out of so many different materials and in so many different styles that the options, and prices, are endless. Necklace pendants can be purchased at local markets and craft fairs for less than $10, and the initials are written on a piece of rice placed in a capsule threaded onto a chain. Tiffany & Co. sells sterling silver initial necklaces for a few hundred dollars. Initial necklaces make great gifts for the special people in your life, and are a wonderful, personalized gift that will be meaningful to the recipients. They can be given for birthdays, graduations, and anniversaries. Another popular gift-giving idea for these necklaces is to give one to an expectant or new mother with her new child’s initial. This will be a treasured piece for years to come.

There are many retailers online that sell these types of necklace and many of them will create a necklace to your specifications. Initial necklace pendants can also be purchased in stores located in malls and other shopping centers; however, the Internet-based sites are likely to have a greater selection. By shopping online, you can also compare prices more easily. Be sure to see the store’s return/exchange policy before placing your order in case the necklace is not what you expected.
